What have you ever learned about history from looking at a statue?
Speaking for myself, nothing. I know a lot about history though. Mostly from reading books, but I also watch a lot of documentaries and like to visit historical sites and monuments when I’m somewhere there is an occasion to. Hearing people say that pulling down Confederate statues is “erasing history” is one of the dumbest fucking things I’ve heard in my life. Again, I ask, what have you ever learned about history from looking at a statue?
I know a lot about World War II, the Third Reich, and the Holocaust. I’m not an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but with a bit of prep time I could teach decent undergrad summary courses on the topics, and I continue to read the most recently available scholarship. I’ve always been fascinated with the German general, Erwin Rommel. I might even go so far as to say I admire him, from a purely military standpoint. Even Winston Churchill praised Rommel saying, “We have a very daring and skillful opponent against us, and, may I say across the havoc of war, a great general.” Yet, I recognize Rommel was a loser on the losing side. He fought for fucking Hitler and I’m not going to put his picture on my wall!
Although I’m not quite as well-versed on the American Civil War, it’s still a topic I’ve read a lot of books about and know well. I’ll admit, the Confederate generals were often more colorful, interesting characters. But they were losers and traitors and fought to keep slavery. That’s it, end of story! They shouldn’t be immortalized in our public spaces.
In all the many political arguments I’ve had over the last few months, 99.9% of Trump supporters speak with ABSOLUTE certainty that Trump will win the upcoming election, and if he loses, it’s because of fraud.
Poor silly Trump Humpers. Shhhhh…it’ll be ok.
First, I will speak of nothing with ABSOLUTE certainty. That’s just tempting fate. Anything can happen and I’m not about to count on anything I expect to happen, especially with the way things are these days. However, Joe Biden’s chances are getting better every day. Donald Dumbfuck is his own worst enemy. Seriously, if he were trying to throw the election, I can’t imagine him doing anything differently. That speaks to the hubris of it all, his hubris, believing he CANNOT do anything wrong. Stop and think about that for a second.
If I had to pick one single thing I hate and distrust the most about Donald Trump is that- the man is utterly incapable of admitting he’s wrong. Someone who can’t admit they’re wrong is dangerous. I’m going to repeat that for posterity-
Someone who can’t admit they’re wrong is dangerous.
We learn from our mistakes, correct our behavior and ultimately improve. Or at least we should. But someone who doesn’t believe they make mistakes never learns, never corrects. That’s inhuman. Think about people like this you may have encountered through life, a boss, a neighbor, friend, or family. How did you feel about them? People who can’t admit being wrong may be the most insufferable people in the world. No one wants to deal with that! Now we have one in control of the entire fucking country. Look how he doubles down on every small, slight error he makes. I’m speaking from a place of authority here. I’ve made many colossally bad mistakes. Life gets messy and we blunder our way through the best we can. But you know what? I’ve tried my damnedest not to keep making the same mistakes. As a father, I’ve tried to teach my kids to admit when they’re wrong, learn from their mistakes and correct their path.
I guess when you’re born with the proverbial silver spoon in your mouth and inherit a fortune, you can just throw money at all your problems and hope they go away. Isn’t that pretty much Donald Trump’s life philosophy? Now it’s the national philosophy. How’s that working out?
I’ve engaged in several stupid arguments about America being a “republic” vs. “democracy”, but what we really are is a plutocracy- a society governed by the wealthy. As right-wingers often point out, even Democrat leaders like Nancy Pelosi and Bernie Sanders are wealthy by most standards. We only maintain the façade of a representative government. Every vote most certainly does NOT count, and our elections are often decided by just a couple of swing states, thanks to the electoral college. People ask, “why should the election be decided by New York or California?” Why should it be decided by Wisconsin, Michigan, or Florida? This is the rigged system that will always keep us in the two-party gridlock. As long as we have the electoral college, Democrats and Republicans will be the only electable candidates. In most of our lifetimes, we’ve seen two candidates lose the popular vote become President. Notice this has only favored one party too! Jesus, if Donald Trump had won the popular vote, but lost the electoral college so Clinton became President, the wailing and gnashing of teeth would have rocked this country. There would be rioting in the streets with muskets and tri-corn hats in fucking colonial cosplay! Typical right-wing hypocrisy. This polarization is what will ultimately destroy us, red tie vs. blue tie, my team vs. your team. When you think about it, a politician’s career basically depends on this polarization. George Carlin said it far better than I ever will…
“The game is rigged and nobody seems to notice. Nobody seems to care! Good honest hard-working people; white collar, blue collar it doesn’t matter what color shirt you have on. Good honest hard-working people continue, these are people of modest means, continue to elect these rich cock suckers who don’t give a fuck about you…. they don’t give a fuck about you… they don’t give a FUCK about you.”
So while you’re so busy worrying about owning the libtards, recognize you’re part of the fucking problem and a big reason why this countries collapse is all but inevitable.
